  26. 1.0     Introduction
  27.  
  28. This file contains last-minute updates that are not found in the User's
  29. Guide or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter.  Please read
  30. this file before proceeding with the installation.
  31.  
  32. For information on running the INSTALL program please refer to the following
  33. sections in your User's Guide:
  34.  
  35. "CONFIGURING YOUR CARD"
  36. "RUNNING THE INSTALL PROGRAM"
  37.  
  38. GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLATIONS:
  39.  
  40. - In order to match the card to your monitor and to your system
  41.   configuration you must run "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION" before installing
  42.   any drivers
  43. - Please refer to "MAIN SELECTION MENU" in your User's Manual.
  44. - After running "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION", run Install Device Drivers
  45.   and EXIT back to DOS.
  46.  
  47.  
  48. GENERAL INFO FOR UPDATE INSTALLATIONS:
  49.  
  50. If you are updating from a previous version of the mach32 Windows Driver
  51. we suggest that:
  52.  
  53. A) You make a backup of you current WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI prior to
  54.    installation
  55.  
  56. B) You use the UNINSTALL WINDOWS DRIVER Option before installing the
  57.    the new drivers. The UNINSTALL will remove any previous mach32 settings.
  58.  
  59. UNINSTALL PROCESS:
  60.  
  61.    a) Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
  62.       disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  63.  
  64.    b) On the Main Menu Screen select the "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVER" and press
  65.       ENTER.
  66.  
  67.    c) From the "Install Device Drivers" pop-up menu select
  68.       "Microsoft Windows"
  69.  
  70.    d) After confirmation of directory and paths you will be presented with
  71.       the "Windows Enhanced" pop-up menu. From this menu, select the
  72.       appropriate "Uninstall" option and follow the directions on the Screen.
  73.

  75.  
  76. 2.0     Adapter Installation
  77.  
  78. Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the mach32 INSTALL
  79. utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
  80. adapter does not conflict with other system resources and that it will
  81. provide optimal performance.
  82.  
  83. The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required
  84. to install a mach32 graphics adapter.
  85.  
  86. 1)  The mach32 requires port addresses 2E0-2EF and 3A0-3DF.  It also uses
  87.     C0000-C7FFF for VGA BIOS.
  88.  
  89.     Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
  90.     which may be using addresses at COM4 (2E8) or addresses between the
  91.     range of 2E0 to 2EF.
  92.  
  93.     Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
  94.     are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
  95.  
  96.     If you have a system containing an on-board graphics controller, consult
  97.     your owners manual on how to disable it.
  98.  
  99.     Check and record how much system memory is installed on the system
  100.     motherboard.
  101.  
  102. 2)  Review your CONFIG.SYS file to determine if a Memory Manager device
  103.     driver is being loaded.
  104.  
  105.     Memory Manager device drivers, such as EMM386, QEMM and 386MAX, may
  106.     interfere with the installation software and should not be loaded
  107.     until the mach32 graphics adapter has been completely installed
  108.  
  109. 3)  After powering down your system, remove your old graphics adapter (or
  110.     disable the on-board graphics controller) and plug-in the mach32.
  111.  
  112.     Connect the monitor cable and mouse cable (if applicable) to the
  113.     mach32 card and power-up the system.
  114.  
  115.     NOTE: Not all mach32 cards have built-in Mouse ports.
  116.  
  117.     If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 1
  118.     and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
  119.  
  120.     If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
  121.     essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
  122.     etc.) to determine the nature of the conflict.
  123.  
  124.     As a last resort, if possible, see if the card works in a different
  125.     system.
  126.  
  127. 4)  Once the system has properly booted, place Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
  128.     disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  129.  
  130.     The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
  131.     be in a "new or changed configuration".  If this message appears, press
  132.     any key to have the INSTALL program update the mach32 EEPROM.
  133.  
  134.     NOTE: The screen will flicker for a few seconds during a configuration
  135.           change.
  136.  
  137.     If the INSTALL program returns to DOS and states that it could not find
  138.     a mach32 based graphics card in the system, return to Step 3 to remove
  139.     any memory manager device driver from your CONFIG.SYS file.

  210. 4.0     Installation Notes for Windows 3.1
  211.  
  212. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
  213.  
  214. 2) Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
  215.  
  216. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select Microsoft Windows.
  217.  
  218. 4) Select INSTALL Windows 3.1 driver:
  219.  
  220.     a) Select Display Drivers only
  221.        - if you have NOT installed Windows based multimedia applications
  222.          (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  223.  
  224.     b) Select Display Drivers + Video drivers
  225.        - if you have installed Windows based multimedia applications
  226.          (e.g. Multimedia CD-ROMS, Video editing packages)
  227.        - Note:  INSTALL will not successfully install the Video drivers
  228.          unless it detects that Video for Windows has already been installed.
  229.  
  230. 5) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  231.  
  232. 6) When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  233.    exit the INSTALL program using the <escape> key.
  234.  
  235. 7) Start Windows, use the mach FlexDesk Control Panel icon to configure
  236.    Windows for the desired resolution and color depth.
  237.  
  238. Note:  If you wish to change the Windows' display driver, to a different
  239.        driver (i.e. VGA or 8514a), do not use the Windows' Setup icon within
  240.        Windows.  To change the display, exit Windows and change directory
  241.        to the Windows subdirectory.  When at the Windows prompt type SETUP
  242.        and select the desired display driver.
  243.  
  244. For further information regarding the mach32 Windows functions please use
  245. MS Write to read the MACH.WRI file.  This Write file is copied to the
  246. Windows directory specified during install.
  247.  
  248.  
  249. 4.1     Multimedia Video Acceleration
  250.  
  251. In order to take advantage of Multimedia Video Acceleration, you will
  252. require one of the following:
  253.  
  254. - Microsoft Video for Windows 1.0 or 1.1
  255. - Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 run-time
  256.  
  257. Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1 run-time is available from the following
  258. sources as a self-extracting file called VFW11A.EXE:
  259.  
  260. - On CompuServe, GEnie, and Microsoft OnLine.  VFW11A.EXE is located in the
  261.   Microsoft Software Library.  You can find VFW11A.EXE in the Software
  262.   Library by searching on the word VFW11A.EXE.  On CompuServe, you can also
  263.   get VFW11A.EXE through the Video for Windows library (use "GO WINMM").
  264. - By Modem.  Use the Microsoft Download Service which you can reach by
  265.   calling (206) 936-6735.  The highest download speed available is 14,400
  266.   bits per second.
  267. - On the Internet.  VFW11A.EXE is located on the Microsoft anonymous ftp
  268.   server, which you can reach by typing "ftp ftp.microsoft.com" (without
  269.   the quotation marks) at the ">" command prompt.
  270.  
  271. Once you obtain VFW11A.EXE, perform the following steps:
  272.  
  273. 1. Copy VFW11A.EXE to an empty directory and expand it by typing "VFW11A.EXE"
  274.    (without quotation marks) at the DOS prompt.  You will now have a file
  275.    called SETUP.EXE.
  276. 2. Start Windows.
  277. 3. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
  278. 4. In the Command Line box, type the path to the SETUP.EXE file you expanded
  279.    from VFW11A.EXE.  For example:
  280.        c:\download\setup.exe
  281. 5. Setup will install the Video for Windows run-time.
  282.  
  283. Re-install the Windows 3.1 driver to enable Multimedia Video Acceleration:
  284.  
  285. 1. Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
  286. 2. Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
  287. 3. From the Install Device Drivers menu, select Microsoft Windows.
  288. 4. Select Install Windows 3.1 driver.
  289. 5. Select Display Drivers + Video drivers.
  290. 6. Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  291. 7. When INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed, exit
  292.    the INSTALL program using the <escape> key.
  293. 8. Start Windows, use the mach FlexDesk Control Panel icon to configure
  294.    Windows for the desired resolution and color depth.

  297.  
  298. 5.0     Installation Notes for AutoDesk products
  299.  
  300. Note:   The following applications are supported:
  301.         AutoCAD R10, R11, R12 (Protected Mode only); 3D Studio R2 and
  302.         AutoShade 386 with Renderman.
  303.  
  304. 1) Run INSTALL from Disk #1 of the mach32 diskettes.
  305.  
  306. 2) Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
  307.  
  308. 3) From the Install Device Drivers menu select one of the following:
  309.  
  310.         AutoCAD
  311.         AutoDesk 3D Studio
  312.         AutoShade
  313.  
  314. 4) Follow the screen instructions to completion.
  315.  
  316. 5) When the INSTALL reports that the driver has been successfully installed,
  317.    hit <escape> to exit the INSTALL program.
  318.  
  319. 6) All the AutoDesk products require environment variables to be loaded
  320.    prior to starting the application.  The INSTALL program creates
  321.    batch files that contain all the necessary SET statements.  These
  322.    batch files will be located in the directory specified during the
  323.    driver installation. The following are the default batch file names:
  324.  
  325.         AutoCAD R10, R11 and R12        ADIACAD.BAT
  326.         AutoDesk 3D Studio R2           ADI3DS.BAT
  327.         AutoShade with Renderman        ADISHADE.BAT
  328.  
  329. 7) After running the appropriate batch file, refer to your AutoDesk
  330.    documentation for information on how to select and reconfigure the
  331.    display driver.
  332.  
  333. For further details, please see README.DLX after installing the drivers.

  336.  
  337. 6.0     Installation Notes for OS/2
  338.  
  339. 1) Insert disk #1 and run INSTALL from within a full screen DOS session
  340.    (under OS/2) and check "Set Power-up Configuration", to ensure that you
  341.    have selected an appropriate monitor type:
  342.  
  343.     a) OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be configured for the IBM
  344.        default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
  345.     b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your monitor
  346.        can support in order to have them functioning correctly under OS/2.
  347.        Only those resolutions that you have configured will display
  348.        correctly.
  349.  
  350. 2) Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
  351.    DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the INSTALL may not work
  352.    if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
  353.  
  354. Note: Do not task switch while running the INSTALL program.
  355.  
  356. 3) From the INSTALL Main Selection Menu, select Drivers Installation and
  357.    pick Presentation Manager.  Then follow the instructions given on the
  358.    screen.
  359.  
  360. Note:  If PM Desktop does not reappear after exiting from the full screen
  361.        DOS session, pressing <Enter> will bring you back to full screen.
  362.        You must reboot to get back to the PM Desktop.
  363.  
  364.  
  365. 4) Run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 window.
  366.  
  367. 5) When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
  368.    and click OK to bring up a list of choices.  You should see an option for
  369.    ATI mach32.
  370.  
  371. 7) Select 'ATI Technologies mach32' from the list and click OK. Ignore the
  372.    error message pop-up which says "The installed adapter does not support
  373.    the selected display driver.  Do you wish to continue?" and click OK.
  374.  
  375. 8) When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter:
  376.    C:\MACH_OS2 (replace c: with your boot drive letter if you don't use c)
  377.    Click 'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2
  378.    window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
  379.  
  380. 9) The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode.  Use the
  381.    following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
  382.  
  383.    a) Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
  384.    b) Open 'System Setup' icon.
  385.    c) Open 'System' icon.
  386.    b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
  387.    e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
  388.    f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the system
  389.       menu to close the window.
  390.    g) Shut down and restart your system.
  391.  
  392. NOTE:    Changing Refresh Rates
  393.  
  394. When changing refresh rates of 640x480 resolution using the mach32
  395. installation diskettes from a DOS full screen window, the computer freezes
  396. up.  IBM OS/2 must use 60 Hz VGA frequency since it sets the registers
  397. directly.  This is a design limitation of OS/2 and only applies to the
  398. 640x480 resolution. Other resolutions may be configured at any vertical
  399. refresh rate.
  400.  
  401. ****************************
  402.  
  403. 7.0     Install and Enhance Driver Features
  404.  
  405. - New High Refresh Modes:
  406.  
  407.     ATI has adopted the 75Hz vertical refresh rate modes which have been
  408.     recently standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association
  409.     (VESA).  Where applicable, these new modes will replace the previous
  410.     76Hz modes at 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 and the 74Hz mode at
  411.     1280x1024.
  412.  
  413.     In addition, ATI has introduced new 90Hz and 100Hz modes for current 2MB
  414.     VRAM mach32 graphics cards.  If you card is capable of supporting these
  415.     modes, the High-refresh options will be selectable under the Monitor Type
  416.     menu.
  417.  
  418.     To access any of these modes, use the following steps:
  419.  
  420.     1.  Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
  421.         disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  422.     2.  From the Main Selection Menu, select Set Power-Up Configuration
  423.     3.  Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
  424.     4.  Under the Monitor Type menu, select either:
  425.             VESA standard 75Hz
  426.             High-refresh 90Hz
  427.             High-refresh 100Hz
  428.     5.  Save your monitor selection by pressing <F10>
  429.     6.  From the Main Selection Menu, re-select Set Power-Up Configuration
  430.     7.  Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
  431.     8.  Under the Monitor Type menu, select the Custom... option
  432.     9.  For each resolution, you must specify the vertical refresh rate.
  433.         You will notice that the refresh rate which you have specified in
  434.         step 4 will now be listed as an option, if it is avaliable at that
  435.         resolution.
  436.  
  437.     Note:  Your existing refresh rates will remain unchanged (i.e. may
  438.            continue to use 74 or 76Hz refresh) until you re-run INSTALL
  439.            (version 2.3) and select and save a new Monitor Type under
  440.            Set Power-Up Configuration.
  441.

  444. Note:  This mode table contains the new 75, 90 and 100 Hz vertical
  445.        refresh rates only.  For all other supported modes, refer to
  446.        the User's Guide Mode Table.

  478. - VDIF.EXE Utility:
  479.  
  480.     VDIF files are monitor definition files which conform to the VESA Display
  481.     Information Format.  They define parameters which provide optimal
  482.     resolution and refresh rate for the specified monitor.  If your monitor
  483.     type is not already defined in the monitor list of the mach32 INSTALL
  484.     program, having the VDIF file for your monitor will save you time.
  485.     Please note that VDIF files are provided by your monitor manufacturer and
  486.     they may not be available for all makes and models.
  487.  
  488.     VDIF.EXE is a mach32 software utility which takes a VDIF monitor
  489.     definition file and converts it into an entry in the monitor list
  490.     of the mach32 INSTALL program.  For complete instructions on using
  491.     VDIF.EXE, consult README.VDI in your mach32 Utilities subdirectory
  492.     (default is C:\MACH32).
  493.  
  494. - Memory Aperture:
  495.  
  496.     The Memory Aperture is no longer configurable on ISA cards.
  497.  
  498. - Accelerated Video Playback:
  499.  
  500.     ATI Multimedia Video Acceleration now supports the accelerated
  501.     playback of video clips based on the following compression schemes:
  502.  
  503.         Intel Indeo 2.1
  504.         Intel Indeo 3.1
